Hamilton

Hamilton is a premier manufacturer of high-tech lab equipment and robotics. They called on Fluent Studios to animate four hardware training videos. The lessons were designed to teach laboratory technicians how to perform maintenance on Hamilton’s mini liquid handler, the Microlab Prep. With easy-to-read technical illustrations and step-by-step guidance, these animations go beyond a printed manual and make a complicated task more easy.

+ More Info

The Microlab is a mini liquid handler workstation designed to replace manual pipetting. Its compact design means that you’ll find it in smaller labs and universities throughout the world. The training videos were designed so that labs don’t need to hire out third parties to do expensive maintenance. Any technician can watch the training videos and understand how to make important fixes themselves. The videos break down the Microlab’s components and functions with clear, precise animations.

Technical equipment calls for technical animation. We worked from 3D renderings and photographs to draw visually simplified illustrations of the labware equipment. These illustrations allowed us to focus on the details of the equipment and interfaces highlighted in the Microlab’s instructions.

The videos are accessed through a display screen attached to the pipetting machine, so the user can follow instructions that mirror the instrument in front of them. It was important that the instructions and animation could be easily translatable, so no matter what language a Microlab technician speaks they’ll know how to use the equipment. We also captured stills from each video, allowing Hamilton to include our illustrations in their printed catalogue.

After we finished the technical animations, Hamilton hired us to make a welcome animation to promote the Microlab Prep at trade shows and on their website. With our signature storytelling approach, we created a fun dialogue about a lab tech who gets tired hand pipetting all day long and is saved after discovering this efficient machine.
